Electric scooter vs electric bike. Which one should I buy and why? -All the things you need to know
Opting for alternative and environmentally friendly means of transport is increasingly preferred by citizens of large cities due to the comfort and safety they offer. If you are thinking of making this change and do not know why to decide, we invite you to learn about the recommendations we give you below.
Personal mobility vehicles (PMV) are increasingly popular for getting around the city, and in addition to being environmentally friendly, they allow you to travel longer distances in less time.
But although the function of the PMV is the same, electric scooters and electric bicycles have some differences, from autonomy to weight and price. Here we will review the most notable aspects and how each of these vehicles differ.
Scooter VS. Electric bike
First of all, the first difference between the two means: they are different things. This is the first step in deciding. It is worth mentioning that both represent the best of the conventional scooter and the most convenient of the common bike, in the case of the electric one. However, it is true that their definitions can vary between one or the other, especially in what has to do with their operation.
Engine and batteries
Both electric scooters and electric bicycles work with the same system, both vehicles have a battery system and an electric motor, but these elements perform a different job.
Electric bicycles have a motor as a pedal assistance, that is, it helps to climb hills, it is not a push motor like that of scooters. Therefore, the motor does not work unless the user is pedaling
Autonomy, distance and charging time
Electric scooter
The motor, not having a push function but rather an assistance function, provides greater autonomy in the case of electric bicycles. With them, you can travel between 30 km and 120 km of autonomy, while scooters usually have a maximum of 50 km of autonomy.
In the case of the battery, both VPM may or may not have a removable battery to make charging much easier. However, it will take approximately 6 hours to charge an electric bike and 4 and a half hours to fully charge an electric scooter.
Weight and ease of transport
One of the advantages of electric scooters is their weight, which usually does not reach 15 kg, while bikes with batteries can weigh between 25 and 55 kg.
In addition, scooters are easier to transport and store, as long as they are foldable. With this, finding a place to leave them will be much easier and in the case of getting on public transport, it will be enough to fold it up and be able to carry it even in your backpack.
Price, ebike is more expensive
A good electric scooter with the best features can cost between $300 and $500, although there are also some for less than $200 that can provide us with the necessary features
On the other hand, bicycles are more expensive, and the cheapest one already reaches 400 euros and can go up to and exceed $2,000 , depending on the needs and the performance we want to obtain.
Conclusion
Both VMP are ideal solutions in the city, they help to avoid the car and you can get to any place in a short time. Perhaps the bicycle is a more comfortable and complete mobility instrument, since driving it is more comfortable and we must use our effort at many times. On the other hand, there are scooters with affordable prices that can meet the needs of many people. An electric bicycle always starts at a higher price.
In any case, it is each user who must assess their needs and act accordingly. The only thing necessary is to change the chip and check that these VMP are always an alternative to using a private vehicle. The revolution in urban mobility has already begun.
